FGCU Receives Award for Most Committed to Community Engagement
10/11/2007

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University was honored with the "2007 Engaged Campus Award" from Florida Campus Compact at the 2007 Inaugural Awards Gala and Dinner Oct. 4. FGCU was recognized as the top state university in Florida to be the most committed to community engagement.

The award was based on five indicators of engagement: institutional culture, curriculum and pedagogy, faculty culture, mechanisms and resources, and community campus. John Cavanaugh, president of the University of West Florida, presented the award on behalf of Florida Campus Compact.

"This is an extremely noteworthy achievement for FGCU as civic engagement is one of our guiding principles," Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Bonnie Yegidis said. "I want to congratulate all the faculty, students and staff on our campus who contributed to this outstanding accomplishment for the institution."

According to executive director of Florida Campus Compact Dee Dee Rasmussen, "Our state has seen tremendous benefits from many campuses that have made intentional investments in their surroundings by connecting student learning to community service and civic engagement, but FGCU really deserves the recognition they achieved in this area. FGCU has studied and implemented the best practices in the field."

Representing FGCU at the awards ceremony was director of Service Learning and Civic Engagement, Linda Summers. Dr. Yegidis represented Academic Affairs, and Peg Gray-Vickrey represented the Office of Curriculum and Instruction. The faculty was represented by Tina Gelpi, Karen Landy and Jessica Rhea.

Special recognition also goes to assistant professors Trisha Fay and Maria Roca for their leadership in this initiative.

Campus Compact is a nationwide coalition of college and university presidents committed to the public purposes of higher education. Made up of more than 1,000 member institutions in 47 states, the organization promotes engaged teaching and learning through organized service projects to develop citizenship skills and values.
