Student Group 'Eagles Educate/ACEI' Collects, Donates Supplies to Local Schools
FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University chapter, Eagles Educate, of the Association for Childhood Education International recently completed its new tradition, School Supply Drive 2007, benefiting local elementary and middle schools.
Chapter members collected school supplies and donations to help elementary and middle schools in Charlotte, Collier and Lee counties.
"We have found that oftentimes, teachers end up buying and supplying their students with materials for the school year," Assistant Professor of Teacher Education Tunde Szecsi said.
"To show our appreciation of seasoned classroom teachers, Eagles Educate/ACEI members decided to hold this school supply drive to give back to our local communities."
Members set up boxes to gather school supplies on campus, as well as going out into the community searching for donors. Stores such as Wal-Mart, Staples, and Dollar Tree provided donations totaling approximately $4,500.
"These companies truly extended their effort to make this school supply drive a huge success," Eagles Educate/ACEI vice president Lacie Brock said.
Students in varying blocks in the College of Education volunteered their time to deliver boxes of supplies to needy classrooms throughout the counties. The supplies replenished school inventories for more than 35 classrooms at several schools.
"We have received feedback from principals, teachers and students with great appreciation for the donation Eagles Educate/ACEI has made," Szecsi said.
"Eagles Educate/ACEI is extremely pleased with the amount of people that this project has reached. This project has shown gratitude to our local classroom teachers, which is well deserved. We have also brought our student branch at Florida Gulf Coast University closer together by accomplishing a goal we set together, which exceeded our expectations."
ACEI's mission advocates for promoting and supporting in the global community the optimal education and development of children.
