FGCU to Dedicate Florida Gulf Coast University Norm and Nancy Vester
Marine and Environmental Science Research Field Station; Media Invited
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the media to attend the dedication of the "Florida Gulf Coast University Norm and Nancy Vester Marine and Environmental Science Field Station" from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 5164 Bonita Beach Road on Little Hickory Island along Fish Trap Bay.
The complex of three buildings at the field station will provide FGCU's Marine and Environmental Sciences programs with access to diverse habitats such as mangroves, oyster reefs, mud flats and sea grasses by faculty and students.
Renovations are under way to create small research spaces that enable faculty and students to conduct laboratory and field experiments requiring running sea water. Research funds are being used to establish an experimental shellfish hatchery for restoration activities along with a temporary holding of marine animals.
The field station was the brainchild of Norm and Nancy Vester, who owned and managed the Bonita Beach Plantation Resort. With a donation in excess of $1 million, the University was able to purchase the property and buildings that benefited both parties. The Vesters will stay on the property in season and look forward to interaction with research faculty and students. The Vesters said their decision to work with FGCU is based upon their experiences with students and faculty, and their concern for community.
For more information, media representatives should contact Professor of Marine Science Aswani Volety at (239) 590-7216.
