FGCU Participates in Annual MS Walk in Lee County
FORT MYERS, FL -Florida Gulf Coast University will participate in the 2008 Lee County National Multiple Sclerosis Society Walk (MS Walk), 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23 at Lakes Park (7330 Gladiolus Drive, 3/4 mile west of Rt. 41) in Fort Myers to help find a cure for the disease.
FGCU has participated in the South Florida Chapter MS Walk in Lee County four consecutive years. Team FGCU has raised $5,000 to $15,000 each year. Last year, the team raised over $6,000 in pledges toward the fight against multiple sclerosis.
FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw will serve as co-chair of the event, and director of Planned Giving Peter Lefferts continues his role as FGCU's captain. More than 100 faculty, staff and students have registered to participate. Fort Myers Mayor Jim Humphrey, Commissioner Bob Janes, and WINK-TV anchors Stacey Adams and Trey Radel are also scheduled to serve as co-chairs in the annual fundraising event.
According to the National MS Society Web site, MS is a chronic, unpredictable neurological disease that affects the central nervous system. It is not contagious and is not directly inherited. Most people with MS have a normal or near-normal life expectancy. There are now six FDA-approved medications that have been shown to "modify" or slow down the underlying course of MS.
The National MS Society is dedicated to helping people address the challenges of living with MS through funding, research, and education and advocacy efforts.
March 10-17 is National MS Awareness Week.
