FGCU Renaissance Academy Hosts Concert Feb. 28
2/20/2008

FORT MYERS, FL - The Renaissance Academy of Florida Gulf Coast University hosts a concert by internationally renowned musicians who perform compositions by Sir Edward Elgar and Edvard Grieg, 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28 at the Norris Center located at 755 8th Ave. S. in Naples. A pre-concert lecture and opportunity to meet the performers is available at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the FGCU Naples Center.

The year 2007 marked major anniversaries for Elgar and Grieg. While the composers enjoyed considerable recognition and fortune in their lives and produced several major works in various genres, they are only represented by a handful of pieces on current concert programs. By bringing together a group of internationally renowned performers, this lecture seeks to address this inconsistency by delving deeper into the two composers' lives and personalities as well as the general aesthetics and social trends/traditions of their times.

International Greek pianist, Charis Dimaras has assembled a group of world-famous performers that include mezzo-soprano Leah Summers (Vienna State Opera and New York City Opera), violinist Alla Aranovskaya and violinist Boris Vayner (members of St. Petersburg String Quartet), violinist Atis Bankas (international soloist and member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra), cellist Roman Mekinulov (principal cellist of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra).

The musicians collaborate to perform vocal and instrumental chamber music including Grieg's early Cello Sonata, and Elgar's magisterial late Piano Quintet, as well as a selection of vocal works by the composers in a variety of chamber music combinations.
