FGCU Bower School of Music's Head of Piano Studies Presents Recital March 31
3/20/2008

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University Bower School of Music invites the public to attend an off-campus recital by associate professor of Music and head of Piano Studies, Michael Baron, 8 p.m., Monday, March 31, at the Bower Chapel at Moorings Park in Naples as part of the Bower School of Music's "Concerts Off Campus" program. Assistant professor of Music and head of Vocal Studies, Jeanie Darnell, soprano, will be joining Baron in an unusual program of song literature followed by solo piano transcriptions of the same works.

An award-winning concert pianist, Baron performs more than 40 concerts each year, including tours of Europe and engagements throughout the United States and Asia. He commands a diverse repertoire, ranging from Baroque compositions to world premieres of contemporary pieces.

Baron, who received a doctorate in piano performance from The Ohio State University, studied with the legendary American pianist Earl Wild. He also worked extensively in Italy with renowned pianist Orazio Frugoni.

Baron currently heads the piano studies program at FGCU. His students regularly win competitions throughout the United States and abroad.

Prior to his position at FGCU, Baron served as Artist-in-Residence, head of Keyboard Studies and tenured associate professor of Music at Mesa State College in Colorado. He also taught at universities in Colorado, New York, Wisconsin and Ohio, as well as many institutions throughout Italy. He regularly serves as jurist on regional, national and international piano competitions.

Baron co-directed the Corsi Internazionali di Musica summer music festival at the University of Urbino for 17 years. He also founded and directed several other music festivals.

He will direct a summer Piano Camp for high school students at FGCU July 30-August 2.
