FGCU Announces Students of the Bower School of Music Move to
Finals in Piano Competition
FORT MYERS, FL - Students of the Bower School of Music at Florida Gulf Coast University were selected to participate in the Artist Series of Sarasota Piano Competition finals May 3. Satoko Hayami, sophomore, Hyae-jin Hwang, sophomore, and Faith Lanctot Sam, junior, were three of the six finalists chosen from a large pool of entrants throughout Florida who submitted recordings to compete for the 2008 Scholarship and Performance Awards for piano.
"We are proud of these students who have worked very hard to get this far in the competition, and we wish them the best as they compete in the finals," said director of the Bower School of Music Nancy Cobb-Lippens.
Associate professor of Music Michael Baron said, "The students deserve our congratulations. In our one and a half years of existence we have been very fortunate to attract some of the finest undergraduate talents in the country. I am proud of our students as they continue to bring honor to FGCU."
The Artist Series of Sarasota sponsors the competition each year, which rotates between vocalists, pianists and instrumentalists. The competition is open to all Florida students up to the age of 25.
The students will compete for prizes. In the Performance Award Level, first prize is $4,500, second prize is $3,500 and third prize is $2,500.
The competition will be judged by Rebecca Pennys of the Eastman School of Music and others. The advisory board and judges are comprised of top musicians of national and international standing.
