FGCU Hosts "Greenprint-A Vision for Southwest Florida;
Featuring Sen. Burt Saunders and Dennis Gilkey
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's Continuing Education and Off-Campus Programs in collaboration with The Southwest Florida Chapter American Institute of Architects, presents "Greenprint - A Vision for Southwest Florida," featuring Sen. Burt Saunders and Dennis Gilkey of Gilkey Organization to provide an update on the recent Florida legislative session and information on regional vision of sustainability in Southwest Florida, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 22 in the Student Union ballroom. The event is open to the public.
Sen. Saunders, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environmental Preservation and Conservation, will give a legislative update relevant to environmental preservation and conservation. Gilkey will give an update on the Century Commission for a Sustainable Florida, related to a coordinated, statewide regional visioning initiative.
Participants will discuss implications of requirements regarding improved energy efficiency in new buildings and increased use of ethanol in gasoline; describe measures being taken to increase use of renewable energy and implications; describe the recommendations of the Century Commission for 2008, with an emphasis on "design" objectives in the community; and share perspectives on trends in population and growth in Florida, and sustainability issues that affect the construction/development industry.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. Certificates of attendance will be available for designers, landscape architects and general contractors, which they may self-submit to the state and/or their national organization.
Contact hours for architects (through American Institute of Architects [AIA] and planners and through the American Institute of Certified Planners [AICP]) are pending, but approval is anticipated.
Cost for two contact hours is $35 before May 15, $40 after May 15. No contact hours cost is $25 before May 15, $30 after May 15. Cost for students with ID and no contact hours is $15.
