FGCU Bower School of Music Hosts Guest Artist Recital Nov. 18

FORT MYERS, FL - The Bower School of Music at Florida Gulf Coast University will present James Scott, flutist, accompanied by Jiři Leviček, pianist, in a Guest Artist Recital, 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18, in the Student Union ballroom. A notable artist, Dr. Scott serves on the Bower School of Music Advisory Council.

Scott began his distinguished professional career while still a first-year student at Emory University, winning a position as flutist in the Atlanta Symphony at a time that made him one of the youngest musicians in the history of the orchestra. Scott has degrees in both flute and piano from the Oberlin Conservatory and the Peabody Conservatory.

He served on the faculty and administration at Rutgers University, Indiana University, the University of Illinois and is currently Dean of the College of Music at the University of North Texas. He has given recitals in Canada, Russia, Croatia, the Czech Republic and the Far East as well as the United States including with the Woodwind Repertory Group of New York, the Schola Cantorum Orchestra, Princeton Pro Musica, Princeton Ballet Orchestra, Opera Theater of New Jersey, Metro Lyric Opera Orchestra, and the Camerata Chamber Orchestra.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Scott has performed with such artists as Samuel Baron, Bernard Greenhouse, Stanley Drucker, Ilana Vered, Paul Coletti, Frederick Urrey, Jens Nygaard, Jerry Hadley, Max Pommer, Nicholas Goluses, and the Shanghai Quartet.

Leviček began studies at the Janaček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in 1999 at the secondary school, and continued at the college level receiving a bachelor's degree there in 2006. Leviček then went to the University Of North Texas College Of Music as an exchange student and has remained there to pursue the prestigious Artist Certificate.

He has studied with Adam Wodnicki and Stefan Karlsson, and has served as pianist for the famous One O'Clock Lab Band. His activities continue to enhance both the classical and jazz realms. He has performed widely both in Europe and the United States.

Among his many awards, he took 1st place in the international competition for the Leos Janaček Award and was recognized for the best performance of Leos Janaček's music. From 2006 to the present, he received the Outstanding Musicianship Award in the classical piano performance field.
