WHY Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) wrote "Suor Angelica" as the second one-act opera in his opera trilogy, "Il Trittico," which also included "Il Tabarro" (The Cloak) and "Gianni Schicchi." It premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1918. Puccini collaborated with librettist Giovacchino Forzano. It takes place at the end of the 17th century in a Tuscan convent. The tragic drama unfolds before the backdrop of a careful, detailed picture of convent life. Puccini's sister Iginia was a nun who became the Mother Superior of a convent in Vicepelago. His understanding of convent life from first-hand experiences may have served as inspiration for "Suor Angelica."
