FGCU School of Nursing Hosts Journalist and Author Suzanne Gordon Jan. 10
1/7/2009

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University School of Nursing Tau Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International invites the public to a lecture and workshop presented by award-winning journalist and author Suzanne Gordon 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 10 in 112 Academic Building V.

The lecture and workshop titled, "From Silence to Voice: Placing Nursing Center Stage," will discuss the reasons why nurses need to reach out more assertively to the public and the media. Participants will learn why it is critical to move from silence to voice, how to construct compelling stories that illustrate the importance of their work, and formulate outreach strategies to friends, family, communities, media and politicians.

Gordon is the author of six books, co-editor of four others, and co-author, with Bernice Buresh, of "From Silence to Voice: What Nurses Know and Must Communicate to the Public" (Cornell University Press). The book won a best book of the year award in 2000 from The American Journal of Nursing.

Gordon has also written for The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Washington Post, American Prospect, Atlantic Monthly, Toronto Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and numerous other publications. She is currently co-editing a series of books for Cornell University Press on the Culture and Politics of Health Care Work.

In addition, she has co-authored a play titled, "Bedside Manners," that deals with nurse/doctor relationships.

Cost for students with ID is $15. Active members pay $30, and non-active members pay $50. A 3.5 continuing education unit (CEU) is offered at the lecture.

For more information, or to register contact assistant professor in Nursing Deborah Chapa at (239) 590-7589 or dchapa@fgcu.edu.
