FGCU Whitaker Center Hosts Nationally Recognized Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education Experts to Lead
Faculty Professional Development Workshop, Feb. 27
FORT MYERS, FL - The Whitaker Center at Florida Gulf Coast University, as part of its inaugural 2008-09 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Academy Series hosts a faculty professional development workshop 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27 in Whitaker Hall 243. The workshop is free and open to the public.
The workshop titled, "Team Teaching," is led by professors Ellen Goldey and Byron McCane from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Goldey is a professor of Biology, a Science Education for New Civic Engagement and Responsibilities Leadership Fellow, a principal investigator for a National Science Foundation award, "Seeing the Big Picture: Linking the Science and the Humanities," and has interests in curricular reform that fosters disciplinary integration.
McCane, the Albert C. Outler Professor of Religion and chair of the Department of Religion, is an archeologist specializing in the academic study of religion, and has appeared in documentaries on the History Channel, National Geographic and the Discovery Channel.
Interdisciplinary team teaching has been increasingly used by K-16 educators to help students integrate and not just pigeonhole their knowledge.Developing and delivering a cohesive team-taught course even among faculty members from similar disciplines can be a challenge. This workshop should be pertinent to educators at all academic levels interested in improving or developing team teaching instructional methodologies and materials.
