FGCU Celebrates Florida Bicycle Month, Hosts Bike Week March 23-26
FORT MYERS, FL - March is Florida Bicycle Month, and Florida Gulf Coast University will celebrate FGCU Bike Week starting Monday, March 23 through Thursday, March 26. FGCU's department of Environmental Health & Safety, along with Campus Recreation are asking students, faculty, and staff to use pedal power to travel to class or work to reduce traffic, lessen polluting emissions, and increase exercise.
On Wednesday, March 25, Florida DOT's Commuter Services will be on campus to chat with students about alternate means of commuting, and LeeTran will be processing student ID cards for discounted bus fares, and discussing the combination of cycling and bus commuting for those who live too far to bike to campus.
The University's department of Campus Recreation will hold an outdoor Spin (stationary) Bike Class on the Library Lawn Wednesday, March 25, and will host group bicycle rides on Thursday, March 26 with intermediate/advanced group ride registration beginning at 10 a.m. with a 10:30 a.m. start time. Novice group ride registration continues at 12:30 p.m. with start time at 1 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
Veteran cyclists and bike vendors will be on hand throughout the week to get cyclists road ready and to consult with about proper bike fit, how to maintain your bike, routes and safety.
"National Bike Month is in May, but with Governor Charlie Crist signing the proclamation this year to make Florida's bike Month in March, we are really able to enjoy Florida's best weather, and promote bicycle commuting to our students and faculty prior to the semester's end," said Kathleen Crawford, coordinator of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability.
