FGCU College of Health Professions Announces Clinical Laboratory Science Program Earns Accreditation
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University College of Health Professions announces its Clinical Laboratory Science program was recently awarded accreditation by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
The Board of Directors' award is based on the initial accreditation review process that included a site visit of the program in November 2008. Accreditation will continue for five years.
"Our CLS program, the community affiliations we have, and the financial support we receive from Lee and Charlotte County hospitals and Physicians Regional Hospital in Collier County, are critical to creating and maintaining the highly skilled health professional workforce that will be so crucial in the coming years," said CLS program director Julie Hammerling. "Medical decisions depend on the diagnostic analysis performed by clinical laboratory scientists, and our community can rest assured that FGCU is producing competent graduates that will provide the quality of care that we all need and expect."
To date 12 students have graduated from the program, another 20 students are currently admitted to the program, and approximately 25 undergraduates are planning to enter the program.
There are two paths in the Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) program at FGCU. One is designed for students who seek a Bachelor of Science degree, national certification and Florida licensure as a clinical laboratory scientist. The other is a post-baccalaureate certificate program in Clinical Laboratory Science, designed for students with baccalaureate degrees in the chemical or biological sciences who seek licensure/certification in clinical laboratory science.
Graduates of this program have diverse skills for employment in a clinical or research setting. The CLS curriculum also serves as a solid preparation for medical, dental, veterinary, pharmacy, and graduate school.
In addition, graduates of the program will find career opportunities in a variety of settings, such as hospital laboratories, physician group practices, regional reference laboratories, industrial biotechnology, clinical management, medical and pharmaceutical sales, research, forensic science and laboratory computer information systems.
