FGCU Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education Attends World Environmental Education Congress in Montreal
FORT MYERS, FL - In an effort to address the global conversation on environmental education and to elevate Florida Gulf Coast University's mission of educating for sustainability, the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education recently participated at the World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) 5 in Montreal, Canada.
Bringing together more than 2,000 stakeholders from over 106 countries, WEEC 5 explored the role environmental education plays in constructing more healthy individuals, communities, and societies. It also addressed how environmental education affects social innovation and public policy development.
Graduate assistants Jessica Mendes and Joseph Weakland, FGCU faculty members Sharon Bevins, Sarah Davis, Donna Roberts, Maria Roca and Center director Peter Blaze Corcoran delivered presentations on the role of academic centers in ecologizing colleges and universities.
In addition to the presentations, the Center launched its most recent publication at the Congress, "Young People, Education, and Sustainable Development: Exploring Principles, Perspectives, and Praxis," co-edited by Philip M. Osano and Peter Blaze Corcoran. The book includes 38 essays, representing a diversity of culture, geography and generation. The 68 contributors come from 25 nations. They provide a global perspective on the theory and practice of education by and for young people. The Preface is written by Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai, the Foreword by Gus Speth, and the Afterword by Former Dutch Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers. It is a contribution to the United Nations Decade on Education for Sustainable Development.
The Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education works toward realizing a sustainable and peaceful future through scholarship education and action.
