FGCU Bower School of Music Breaks Ground on the Music Education and Performance Building
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University Bower School of Music honored Alan and Marilyn Korest, for their support in establishing the Bower School of Music, with a groundbreaking ceremony for the Music Education and Performance Building on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at the Arts Complex Cul-de-sac.
A State of Florida allocation of $11.6 million will fund this essential education and performance facility for the Bower School of Music that will benefit music majors, faculty and the community.
FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw concurred, "Through music instruction, performance, community service and outreach, the Bower School of Music enhances the cultural offerings and improves the quality of life for all who live, work and play in this region."
This fall, FGCU's Bower School of Music will welcome more than 110 music majors, and the school has fast outgrown its temporary classroom space. The new 23,000-square-foot, two-story signature facility will be a destination site for the greater community, overlooking a scenic lake and wetlands in a developing arts corridor on the main campus of the University.
The building will house an attractive Grand Lobby to welcome students and visitors; a 3,260-square-foot, 196-seat Recital Hall with superb acoustics, stage, sightlines and plush seating with ample leg room and personal space for optimum music experiences; and an equally large Rehearsal Hall.
In addition, the facility will house 10 faculty studios for individual instruction; 10 student practice rooms for independent instrumental/vocal study, classrooms, technology laboratories for student use; and a music library.
Next year, FGCU expects to graduate the Bower School of Musicís first class, and the School will have qualified for program accreditation. In addition, FGCU plans include the expansion of academic instruction to include graduate studies and music therapy.
This specialty building, designed to accommodate growth both in enrollment and audience, is a collaborative design by Reynolds, Smith and Hills, Inc. in Fort Myers, Pfeiffer Partners Architects, Inc. in New York and Los Angeles, Johnson Engineering, OCI Associates, TKW Structural Engineers, and JaffeHolden. It is being constructed by Owen-Ames-Kimball Company and will be completed by the winter of 2010-2011.
FGCU Foundation is offering permanent and prominent recognition within this cultural facility for donors of $1,000 or more. Gifts will benefit the Bower School of Music academic programs.
