FGCU Introduces Interim Director for the Bower School of Music
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences has introduced Robert Thayer as interim director for the Bower School of Music. He arrived at FGCU in August for the 2009-2010 academic year, and will lead the Bower School of Music while a national search is conducted to replace founding director Nancy Cobb-Lippens.
"The remarkable growth of the Bower School of Music in the few short years of its existence provides a hint of the exciting future that lies ahead - a future that will be immeasurably enhanced by the splendid new building," said Thayer.
Thayer has played French horn in the Erie Philharmonic, the Wichita Symphony, and the Cedar Rapids Symphony. He has taught elementary and secondary schools in Pennsylvania and Kansas. He taught for five years at Friends University in Wichita, Kan., during which time he also was instructor of horn at Wichita State University; then was a member of the music faculty at Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa.
Thayer served as Dean of the Crane School of Music, Potsdam, New York and the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University in Ohio; Interim Dean of the School of Music at DePauw University in Indiana; Interim Head of the Department of Music at the University of Connecticut in Storrs; Dean of the Conservatory of Music at Lawrence University; and most recently as Interim Chair of the Department of Music Education at Bowling Green State University.
He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, a Master of Music Education from Wichita State University, and an undergraduate degree in music from the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester.
For additional information, media representatives should contact Thayer at (239) 590-7374.
