FGCU Hosts Global UGRAD Student from Ukraine
FORT MYERS, FL - This fall, Florida Gulf Coast University welcomed Nadiia Matviiv from Ukraine, who is participating in the U.S. Department of State’s Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in Eurasia and Central Asia (Global UGRAD).
FGCU's International Services was awarded the opportunity to host Matviiv, who will enroll in education courses, participate in campus activities and community programs, and other typical American experiences to learn more about this country.
As a Global UGRAD fellow, the student will be required to provide at least 20 hours of community service. The service should provide interaction and hands-on opportunities between the student and the host community.
Matviiv will be required to participate in the Cultural Ambassadors Passport to America program, designed to help her gain in-depth exposure to several key American values such as diversity, faith and family, and civic engagement, among others.
"I am very proud to have been accepted at FGCU," said Matviiv. "This is a great opportunity for me to widen my knowledge about the U.S. and its culture, compare the system of education to the system in my native country, and have a great experience of communication and daily life."
Matviiv will take part in new activities on campus or in the community, and will be required to speak in at least two events in the community during her one year academic program at FGCU.
The Global UGRAD program is highly competitive, averages over 3,000 applications per year with a 5 percent rate of acceptance, and is administered by the International Research & Exchanges Boards (IREX). Since 1992, nearly 4,000 participants have completed the program, increasing diversity on over 140 campuses throughout the United States.
