FGCU Students to Participate in "Mission 350" Global Event
FORT MYERS, FL - In an effort to raise awareness about climate change, Florida Gulf Coast University students are organizing an event ("Mission 350") to plant 350 trees and plants along the northeastern edge of the pond in front of FGCU's library, 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 24.
This planting event - 200 bald cypress trees and 150 aquatic plants - will be part of a worldwide awareness effort to highlight global warming and climate change. Many students will be using this event as part of their Service Learning requirement at FGCU in becoming involved and participating in their community.
FGCU students learned about these events through 350.org (http://www.350.org/), a grassroots organization encouraging people to hold events Oct. 24 that bring attention to the number “350” – the amount of parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide that scientists consider to be the safe upper limit for our atmosphere.
Participants in 350.org hope that their efforts will send the message to political leaders that they should use the latest data from climate change scientists in crafting an equitable and appropriate response to the worldwide crisis when meeting for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in December in Copenhagen, Denmark (http://unfccc.int/2860.php).
There are nearly 4,000 events planned in 163 countries and the list now includes FGCU.
