FGCU Small Business Development Center Hosts Fraud Workshop at Bonita Chamber
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has joined forces with the Bonita Springs Area Chamber of Commerce to offer a free workshop, "What's Not in Your Wallet," to educate small business owners on how to protect their businesses from fraud, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 1 at the Bonita Springs Chamber Boardroom located at 25071 Chamber of Commerce Drive, in Bonita Springs.
According to research conducted by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), U.S. organizations lose an estimated 7 percent of annual revenues to fraud. Based on the projected U.S. Gross Domestic Product for 2008, this percentage indicates a staggering estimate of losses around $994 billion among organizations, despite increased emphasis on anti-fraud controls and recent legislation to combat fraud.
Workshop presenters include Ron Kohl, public information officer for the Lee County Sheriff's Office, who will present on identifying, reducing and preventing employee fraud. Laura Rhoad, human resources director for Sunshine Ace Hardware, will present on good hiring procedures and employer's rights in regard to discipline and termination; and Paul Poland, assistant state attorney assigned to the Fort Myers region, will present on the criminal charges applicable to employee theft, admissibility of evidence, the criminal prosecution process as well as restitution to the small business owner.
Christine Ross, president and CEO of the Bonita Springs Area Chamber of Commerce will moderate the session.
"In today's business environment small business owners need to educate themselves on the signs of employee theft and fraud in general," said director of FGCU SBDC Dan Regelski. "Oftentimes we hear business owners say it cannot happen to me, but when it does happen, they begin to wonder how they could have prevented it."
A complimentary continental breakfast will be provided. The seminar if free to attend but registration is required.
