FGCU Physical Plant Endowed Scholarship Fund Grows
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's Physical Plant and the FGCU Foundation recently received a generous and significant gift from USSI, Inc. in support of the Physical Plant Endowed Scholarship Fund - a scholarship fund that will financially assist qualified students enrolled in environmental studies, civil engineering or environmental engineering annually.
USSI has been serving the University by providing custodial services on campus since 2003. Skip Spurgeon, vice president, Viviana Bernal, area manager, and Maria Lisbeth Anzueto, project manager of USSI presented a $6,500 check to the FGCU Foundation demonstrating their commitment to FGCU students and Physical Plant. Junior and environmental studies major Keishla Negron-Acevedo of Islamorada, Fla. was the first student recipient. She attended the presentation to share with the donors what the scholarship means to her and her family.
With USSI's gift, the Physical Plant Endowed Scholarship Fund has received more than $35,000 in contributions since 2007. While serving as an ambassador for the employee annual giving campaign, assistant director of Finance and Business Operations in Physical Plant Vikki McConnell realized that collective donations from the department could result in an endowment. Creation of the endowed scholarship fund allows employees in Physical Plant to support both students and its departmental mission.
"Students in our department are a constant reminder of why we are here and who we are here to serve," McConnell said.
McConnell, Al Bielen, assistant director of Physical Plant and Jim Hehl, director of Physical Plant are grateful to USSI for their contribution toward FGCU students.
The Physical Plant department at FGCU provides campus operations and maintenance. The department is actively involved with students, employing over 100 students since 1997, including 49 work study and 12 international students.
