FGCU Student Receives Scholarship from St. Andrew's Society of SWFL to Study in Scotland
2/3/2010

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University recently received a $5,000 scholarship from St. Andrew's Society of Southwest Florida, Inc. in Naples for a student to study in Scotland for one semester. FGCU junior Kristine Cosgrove was awarded the scholarship to study at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland this spring.

St. Andrew's Society (Naples) established "The St. Andrew's Society of SWFL, Inc. Study in Scotland Scholarship Fund" at FGCU to expose a young person to life in Scotland and to learn about its history and culture. The Society has partnered with the FGCU International Services office to make this opportunity available for a local student to study in Scotland.

Don McGee, a former St. Andrew's Society (Naples) president and current scholarship chair, along with members of its Board of Directors, have provided the impetus for the scholarship program. "This is an exciting opportunity for us to select and support a student with great interest and enthusiasm who will not only learn about Scotland directly, but will bring this experience back to our area to share with others."

McGee added that members of St. Andrew's Society have planned to assist local university students with high scholastic achievement and an interest in the history and culture of Scotland for some time. "Funds accumulated have been obtained through members' individual small contributions over the last 10 years."

The FGCU International Services office helps students enhance their degree study and broaden their global perspectives through a variety of study abroad programs. "FGCU greatly appreciates the partnership with St. Andrew's Society in providing this unique educational opportunity for our students to expand their learning by immersion in the history, culture and contemporary events of Scotland," said Elaine Hozdik, director of International Services. "We are grateful to St. Andrew's Society for their partnership in providing this opportunity to our students who otherwise might not be able to pursue this educational goal. It will also help to promote knowledge and understanding of the rich Scottish heritage and history."

Cosgrove's semester of study at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland is the second award made by St. Andrew's Society to a student recommended by the International Services office.

"By spending a semester in Scotland, living and studying, I will be able to take a different array of courses while simultaneously interacting with a new land, culture and lifestyle," said Cosgrove, a junior majoring in chemistry. "Taking part in one of these programs will allow me not only to experience working with international students, but also the benefits of studying overseas."

Cosgrove began her Scottish experience January 24 as a guest of St. Andrew's Society's Rabbie Burns Supper, where she was introduced to nearly 200 attendees.
