SCF and FGCU Announce Baccalaureate Scholarship for SCF Collegiate School Graduates
FORT MYERS, FL - State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) welcomed the inaugural classes of SCF Collegiate School (SCFCS) with the announcement of a groundbreaking partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) that will provide a scholarship program for SCFCS students to continue to FGCU for a baccalaureate degree after graduating from SCFCS with both a high school diploma and Associate in Arts degree.
FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw said, "SCF has created an innovative model for student success with a Collegiate School of sixth through 12th grades. We are proud to partner with the College in extending this opportunity to families and are especially impressed that SCFCS exceeded its recruitment goal by enrolling 62 percent first-generation students in the first classes."
"This innovative agreement with FGCU will provide dividends to SCFCS graduates and their families for years to come," said SCF President Dr. Lars A. Hafner, estimating the equivalent value of the full four-year package for each graduate at about $22,000 in 2010 costs for two years at a state college and two years at a university.
"We appreciate the foresight of President Bradshaw and his leadership team at FGCU, who recognized that these scholarships will serve as a further incentive for students to complete a baccalaureate degree."
A tuition-free public charter school, SCFCS provides students with the opportunity to graduate simultaneously with a high school diploma and Associate in Arts (A.A.) college degree. Starting this fall with sixth and seventh grades, in subsequent years SCFCS will include sixth through 12th grades. Graduates of 2014 will be the first class to take advantage of the FGCU scholarship offer.
In addition to expanding the tuition-free pathway from sixth grade through a baccalaureate degree, SCFCS is unique in other ways:
• an innovative curriculum and design adapted from an internationally proven Swedish model;
• the achieved goal of focusing recruitment on first-generation students;
• the integration of technology with curriculum, anchored by a strong two-way partnership with Apple that provides SCFCS students with updated and cutting-edge equipment, including
an iPad for each student;
• the status as the first college in the nation to operate a charter school with middle school grades on a college campus.
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, est. 1957, is the region's first and largest public college with 36,000 graduates. SCF's expanded mission includes workforce baccalaureate degrees, a collegiate school and a core commitment to open access and quality education at the two-year level. SCF's annual enrollment tops 36,000 college credit students plus 25,000 participants in professional development and enrichment classes at campuses in Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Venice and eCampus. www.scf.edu.
