FGCU to Collaborate with Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute's Undergraduate Research Program in Microbial Genome Annotation
FORT MYERS, FL - The Education Department at the Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute has selected Florida Gulf Coast University assistant professors Michael LaGier and Jan Dejarnette to collaborate in The Undergraduate Research Program in Microbial Genome Annotation. The meeting and workshop for the collaborators will be held Jan. 27-28 at the Department Energy's Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA.
According to the DOE's Joint Genome Institute, the selection of applications was very competitive. FGCU was selected because the application demonstrated the potential to enrich FGCU's science curriculum with sequence-based, genomics and bioinformatics research. The Joint Genome Institute believes that the scientists have the potential to contribute to the national model for undergraduate-based science research that it is collectively developing. As partners with the Joint Genome Institute, FGCU scientists and students will have a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in the area of microbial genomics.
The collaboration between the Joint Genome Institute, undergraduate educators and their students is a response to the call to reform undergraduate life sciences education through research experience. The Undergraduate Research Program in Microbial Genome Annotation will have corollary benefits of increasing the number of home-grown researchers and enhancing basic scientific literacy.
