FGCU Division of Public Affairs Hosts Health, Planning, and Built Environment Lecture

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's Division of Public Affairs - Southwest Florida Center for Public and Social Policy, and other community partners, offer a special opportunity to hear from national, state and local experts talk about "Health, Planning, and the Built Environment: Designing Communities for a Healthier Southwest Florida," 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Friday, April 1 at the Realtor Association of Greater Fort Myers and the Beach - REALTOR Association Education Center, located at 4081 Center Pointe Drive in Fort Myers.

Keynote speaker is Dr. Richard J. Jackson, professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. Jackson has done extensive work on the impact of the environment on health, particularly relating to children, and chaired the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Environmental Health. Over the past decade, much of his work has focused on the 'built environment,' including how architecture and urban planning affect health.

Currently, Jackson has been working on policy analyses of environmental impacts on health ranging from toxicology, chemical body burdens, terrorism, sustainability, climate change, urban design and architecture.

Jackson earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of California, San Francisco, and a Master of Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley.

Sandra Whitehead from the Florida Department of Health will present on state level issues related to health and sustainability. The program also includes Active Living Design Vignettes, which will visually present the concepts of health and the built environment.

Cost to attend is $20 for community members, FGCU students get a discounted rate of $10 or can register for one credit, PAD 6934, ST: Health, Plan, & Built Env., CRN 11907.
