FGCU Hosts Florida Public Archaeology Network's Historic Cemetery Research, Volunteers Needed
FORT MYERS, FL - The Southwest Regional Center of the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN), hosted at Florida Gulf Coast University, will be conducting a ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey at the historic Kirkland Cemetery on Shell Island Road in Naples at 11 a.m., Friday, July 22. Volunteers are invited to assist Rookery Bay National Research Preserve and FPAN staff with the process.
This year, Rookery Bay resource managers, working with the Kirkland family, asked FPAN for help with the cemetery project. Using GPR, Rookery Bay hopes to delineate the historic cemetery boundaries and identify any additional grave sites that were not previously recorded and marked.
GPR is a groundbreaking new technology that provides a three-dimensional picture of sedimentary layers. When combined with other archaeological and historical research techniques, GPR images can provide researchers with a better understanding of what may be concealed beneath the ground.
Shell Island is located off SR-951/Collier Blvd 2.8 miles south of East Tamiami Trail. Turn onto Shell Island Road and travel 2.5 miles to parking.
For more information contact FPAN at (239) 590-1476 or Rookery Bay at (239) 417-6310, or visit the FPAN website at: http://www.flpublicarchaeology.org.
