FGCU Recognized for its Dedication to Community Projects
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) was recognized by The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars for its dedication to community projects during its annual awards luncheon Oct. 3 in Washington, D.C.
FGCU was one of six institutions of higher education to receive the "Higher Education Civic Engagement Award." Honorees were chosen among 140 nominees based upon leadership in community programs and projects. The other five recipients are Augsburg College, Benedict College, DePaul University, Duke University and San Francisco State University.
FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw accepted the award.
"This honor from The Washington Center is especially meaningful because civic engagement and service is such a central of who we are as a campus community at FGCU. I continue to be impressed with the unwavering commitment our students, faculty and staff have to serving both our local and our global communities. It is a constant point of pride for me to know that our students demonstrate this commitment each day," said Bradshaw.
Other FGCU representatives who attended the event include Jessica Rhea, director of Civic Engagement and Service Learning; Sean Kelly, director of the Honors Program; Scott Karakas, director of General Education; Annette Snapp, former director of the Colloquium; and James Wohlpart, interim dean of Undergraduate Studies.
Every student at FGCU must participate in 80 hours of service-based learning prior to graduation. Through the university's EaglesConnect program, students have access to more than 300 community agencies, and in 2010 students completed 132,451 total hours of service-learning. This year, FGCU went over the 1,000,000 mark in total service-learning hours since its inception in 1997.
Additionally, all bachelor students must participate in an academic course-based service-learning experience called University Colloquium. Students explore the topics of sustainability and ecological literacy, engage in 10 hours of service-learning, and complete reflective papers and projects.
"The Higher Education Civic Engagement Awards were created in 2009 to find colleges and universities that are true role models for civic engagement in the academic community," said Mike Smith, president of The Washington Center. "Florida Gulf Coast University has created an environment that brings students and community organizations together, showing that the best and most well-rounded academic experience is not just defined by classroom learning."
