The Galleries at FGCU Opens New Year with "You Call This Art" Major Exhibit Examines the Validation of the Term, "Art"
1/5/2012

FORT MYERS, FL - The Galleries at Florida Gulf Coast University presents "You Call This Art" exhibition with an opening reception 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 13. Gallery Talk by guest Alan Brown, collector and owner of Alan Brown Gallery at 4 p.m. The exhibit is sponsored by WGCU Public Media as part of its Membership Nights. The show runs through Feb. 9.

The contemporary show features over 50 works in various mediums including sculpture, photography, collage, accumulations, oil on canvas, lithographs and more. The exhibition as a whole challenges the title by simple emphasis on different words.

The exhibit highlights works by well-known artists and some by others who were considered cutting edge artists over the last four decades. Several artists are members of the POP art movement, which was controversial at the time but well accepted today. Showings include works by Cindy Sherman, Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol and Annie Leibovitz.

"You Call This Art allows the viewer to look at the whys of the artwork and then leads to the hows of construction with various new and innovative materials," said Susan Brown, guest curator for the exhibit. "Many different mediums are included in the exhibit and it is up to the observer to understand that it is all art. The exhibition is meant to be a thought provoking process."

The Art Gallery is located inside the Arts Complex on FGCU's main campus. The University is located off Ben Hill Griffin Parkway, east of I-75 between exits 123 and 128. Parking is available in Lot 7 for gallery visitors; parking passes are available at the parking kiosk located at the University's entrance.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Thursday nights from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
