FGCU's Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Invites the Public to Community Engagement Day, April 13

FORT MYERS, FL - Over 500 students will showcase their community service-learning projects at the 2012 Community Engagement Day event, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday, April 13 in Alico Arena, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University’s Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement. The event is free and open to the public.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with keynote speaker Sarah Owen, president and CEO of the Southwest Florida Community Foundation. She leads a team of community collaborators dedicated to connecting donors and their philanthropic aspirations with the evolving needs in Southwest Florida. Owen spent six years as the CEO of Community Cooperative Ministries, Inc. (CCMI), an agency dedicated to creating innovations in the fight against hunger and homelessness. She also worked for publicly traded companies on the New York Stock Exchange as well as private companies.

Students will display their projects between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., culminating with an awards ceremony at 1 p.m.

Service-learning is an educational experience designed to meet mutually identified community and university needs. It is integrated in the classroom for an enhanced understanding of course and discipline content. Service-learning is a reflective activity that increases knowledge and skills, and provides an enriched learning experience that contributes to personal and career growth. Service-learning facilitates civic engagement and responsibility through reciprocal learning and sensitivity to cultural, economic, and social differences.
