FGCU Junior Named Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact
4/12/2012

FORT MYERS, FL - Kelly Walsh, a junior at Florida Gulf Coast University, was recently named a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact. As a Newman Civic Fellow, Walsh of Islamorada, Fla., will join a network of distinguished campus leaders around the country.

Campus Compact's member college and university presidents from across the country nominated 162 student leaders for the 2012 class of Newman Civic Fellows. The students demonstrate a personal commitment to creating lasting change for the better in their communities. Through service, community-based research, and advocacy, the 2012 Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves and the root causes of some of today's most pressing social issues.

An environmental studies major, Walsh demonstrates the type of civic engagement that sets an example for others. Her leadership has empowered faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members to consider the way in which lifestyles might be reoriented toward local, seasonal, and nutritional food choices. She has worked with community vendors, retailers and experts to advance the work of FGCU's Food Forest, a half-acre permaculture garden where vegetables are being cultivated.

Jim Wohlpart, Interim Dean for Undergraduates Studies and Food Forest Advisory Council member, was delighted to hear about Walsh’s award. "Service is a part of what all of our students, faculty, and staff do at FGCU, but some of our students take their service to another level, transforming not just their communities but also themselves," said Wohlpart. "In her work, Kelly has not only demonstrated a commitment to sustainable food practices, connecting the environmental component of our mission to her service and her leadership, but she has also demonstrated a commitment to the university and the Southwest Florida community. We are better for her presence on our campus."

The FGCU Food Forest is a place for students, faculty, staff and community members to come together to learn about and move toward a more sustainable future, while creating an even stronger sense of community on campus.

Campus Compact is a national coalition of almost 1,200 college and university presidents - representing more than 6 million students who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education, namely to improve community life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility.
