FGCU's 28th Commencement Graduates over 1,300 Students April 29 at Alico Arena
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University expects to graduate over 1,300 students during spring commencement exercises 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29 at Alico Arena - FGCU Main Campus.
The morning ceremony confers the College of Arts and Sciences, U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering and College of Health Professions. Doors open for guests at 9:30 a.m.
The afternoon ceremony confers the Lutgert College of Business, College of Education and College of Professional Studies. Doors open for guests at 1:30 p.m.
Members of the media will gain entry by presenting proper credentials at a designated table marked MEDIA REGISTRATION at the Alico Arena entryway.
Commencement tickets are labeled for either a.m. ceremony or p.m. ceremony as appropriate. Guests will not be permitted to use the p.m. tickets for the a.m. ceremony and vice versa. Guests will be directed to the overflow room in the Cohen Center ballroom.
FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw will confer bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in the University's six academic colleges: Arts and Sciences, Education, Health Professions, Lutgert College of Business, Professional Studies and U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering. FGCU has conferred more than 10,000 degrees since fall 1997. The commencement ceremony lasts approximately two and one half hours.
This year, Sen. Garrett Richter, R-Naples, will deliver the keynote speech for both the morning and afternoon ceremonies.
Richter was elected to the Florida Senate in 2008. He served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2006-2008. Richter has served on numerous boards and foundations throughout Southwest Florida.
He was a founder and former president and CEO of First National Bank of Florida. Additionally, he is a founder and president of First National Bank of the Gulf Coast. Richter earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Pittsburgh. He was awarded a bronze star while serving in the U.S. Army with the 75th Ranger Company in Vietnam in 1971.
This year also celebrates the second set of graduates to receive a Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) from the College of Health Professions. Nineteen students will receive the clinical doctorate degrees.
Commencement ceremonies are held twice a year, in spring and fall. The spring commencement is for graduating candidates who have completed or who plan to complete all degree requirements in the spring term. The fall ceremony is for graduating candidates who have completed or who plan to complete all degree requirements in the summer or fall semesters.
Alico Arena has a policy prohibiting balloons in the arena and will not allow them to be brought into the arena for the commencement ceremony. Additionally, in an effort to provide the most comfortable experience for all participants and guests, we ask that attendees refrain from the use of latex and scented fragrances during the Commencement ceremonies.
