FGCU University Police Department Awarded First Place for 2011 Traffic Safety Efforts
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University Police Department (UPD) won first place in the University Division of the 2011 Florida Law Enforcement Challenge. Sgt. Brian Jones, who oversees the traffic safety program within the UPD and submits the data driven application, attended the awards ceremony in Orlando on July 13. The award includes an eagle trophy, certificate and $15,000 in traffic related products.
The Florida Law Enforcement Challenge rewards the best overall traffic safety programs in Florida. The areas of concentration include efforts to enforce the laws and educate the public about occupant protection, impaired driving, speeding and other areas of traffic safety.
"In addition to hosting and attending local area network meetings, participating in Lee County DUI Roadblock efforts and continually participating in Click it or Ticket campaigns, UPD continuously strives to keep the campus roadways safe through efforts in education, enforcement and engineering," said Chief Steven Moore, director of Public Safety - University Police Department. "These efforts of UPD and the FGCU community have worked to maintain safety on our campus roadways."
FGCU has improved an already high seatbelt usage rate at 90 percent for 2011. UPD utilizes the variable message boards on campus to remind drivers to buckle up, drive safely, and be cautious of the high volume of pedestrians and golf carts on campus.
