FGCU Welcomes U.S. Department of State Global UGRAD Student
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) has welcomed international student Maham Akhtar from Pakistan as part of the U.S. Department of State's Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in Pakistan (Global UGRAD-Pakistan).
Global UGRAD-Pakistan program aims to advance youth leadership and promote mutual understanding by providing one academic term of non-degree undergraduate U.S. study on a highly competitive basis to a diverse group of emerging student leaders from underrepresented sectors of Pakistan. The program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State and administered by the International Research and Exchange Board (IREX).
In addition to her academic studies, Akhtar will perform community service and explore American traditions through the Cultural Passport to America program. She will participate in activities such as the arts, holiday celebrations and sports, and experience other aspects of daily community life and local pride.
By interacting with Americans on campus and in the community, Global UGRAD-Pakistan fellows have the opportunity to develop a well-rounded perception of U.S. culture. In turn, they share their new understanding with friends, family and others back home.
"Global UGRAD-Pakistan fellows are also ambassadors for Pakistan," said Timothy Gjini, associate director for FGCU International Studies. "Many of the students are the only representative of Pakistan on campus. Their unique perspectives and backgrounds enrich the learning experience for American students."
Global UGRAD-Pakistan fellows also give presentations about their country and cultures at local schools, Rotary clubs, retirement communities and other locations.
