The Art Gallery at FGCU Opens New Year with "The Interpreters"
1/28/2014

Exhibit examines the fleeting moments in our lives

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Art Gallery at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) opens "The Interpreters" exhibition at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6. A gallery talk with the artists and opening reception are from 6 to 8 p.m. The show runs through March 13.

The exhibit highlights works by Babette Herschberger, Luis Garcia-Nerey, Juana Meneses, Laz Ojalde and John Sanchez -- featured artists from the ArtCenter/South Florida Residency Program in Miami. Their work encompasses drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and mixed media. Artists in the program are committed to experimentation and innovation while pursuing artistic and professional development. One of the goals is to contribute to a dynamic community of local, national and international artists and creative thinkers.

"The Interpreters" brings to viewers an examination of fleeting moments. Whether through realism or minimalism, reuse or reappropriation, the artists find inspiration from everyday objects and moments. The transformation of the commonplace into a complex intersection of plan and form brings forth something valuable and meaningful.

The Art Gallery is in the Arts Complex on FGCU's main campus off Ben Hill Griffin Parkway, east of Interstate 75 between exits 123 and 128. Parking is available in Lot 7 for gallery visitors; parking passes are available at the parking booth at the University's entrance.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

For further information on this exhibition and others, visit the Art Gallery's website, artgallery.fgcu.edu, or contact Anica Sturdivant at (239) 590-7199.
