Program Details

The Teaching Hammock is a two-week intensive educational program in July. Three one-day workshops prepare the FGCU student teachers and the Seminole aides. Teachers are asked to set goals during the workshop. They create a plan--how students should be taught and how cultural features can be added. They are asked to review the plan at the end of the project, analyze lessons learned and revise their plan in preparation for next year's Teaching Hammock.

The local public school will identify which students need specific remedial activities in order to pass to the next grade. Students not in need of remedial help will mentor and tutor those students who do need help.Children learn and participate in activities that center on Seminole culture. Lessons and projects focus on reading, writing, and math. The Teaching Hammock culminates with a Celebration Day, where the community is invited to view the students' accomplishments.
