Below is a list of answers to questions related to COVID-19 for the Spring 2022 semester. If you have an additional question that is not answered below, please email academicaffairs@fgcu.edu with your specific question.

  • What should I do if a student or employee tells me they have COVID-19?

  • I’m a faculty member who has heard from a contact tracer, either through FGCU’s case management system or the Florida Department of Health. What am I allowed to share about my class?

  • I’m a faculty member. Can I notify my students if there has been a positive COVID-19 case in a classroom on a particular date?

  • Some in-person classes are densely packed. May we switch to virtual classes to increase distancing?

  • Can we require webcam proctored online exams if we have to pivot online (even if we did not state that in Gulfline)?

  • For in-person courses, what happens if a student or several students need to quarantine and miss class? Are faculty expected to teach both in-person and virtually throughout the semester?

  • If our modality is in-person, can we still offer a synchronous online component for students unable to come to campus?

  • Can faculty record classes?

  • Will class capacities remain at 100% and are events continuing to be held in-person?

  • Are we free to invite guest speakers to our class?

  • What will be the policy for university-provided/required transportation for field trips?

  • If the “preference” is to have advising appointments in-person, can we have the return of plexiglass and other structures to allow for safety of both parties?

  • Have we budgeted for backchannel assistants?

  • Can faculty office hours be held via Zoom?

  • Are we permitted to Zoom quarantined students to an in-person class so that they can participate?

  • Given the limited size of faculty office spaces, can faculty require students/visitors to their offices to wear masks?

  • How firmly may I recommend masks/distancing in my classroom?

  • Are faculty able to dismiss class if a student refuses to wear a mask?

  • Will FGCU provide masks for students to use in the classrooms/labs that the instructors can distribute if students forgot their mask?

  • What language can faculty use on their syllabus for a policy regarding recommended mask-wearing and social distancing for students in the classroom?

  • Can we ask students to show their Veoci green check before entering class?

  • Can we ask to see the Veoci app on student phones - not the checkmark, just the app icon?

  • How do you recommend we handle group projects in classrooms?

  • To clarify, can we do assigned seating? Can maskless students be required to sit farther away?

  • If a student self-reports to us that they have tested positive, or are self-quarantining due to exposure, what is the current requirement/expectation and procedure for us to report on that communication?

  • We have community clinical partners requiring students to be vaccinated to do their clinical. How do we handle this when we can't ask them if they are vaccinated? Our clinical partners also require mask-wearing to do their rotation at our partners' locations. What is the guideline for these situations?

  • How can you maintain 6 feet distancing when classrooms are at full capacity?

  • What if a student is immunocompromised? Can they request faculty to adjust their teaching for them?

  • Should faculty ask for documentation of a positive test in order to excuse student absences if a student claims they must quarantine?
