School of Resort & Hospitality Management Receives ACPHA Reaccreditation

On March 11, 2021, the School of Resort and Hospitality Management (SRHM) in the Lutgert College of Business received official renewal of its accredited status with the Accreditation Commission for Programs of Hospitality Administration (ACPHA). The period of accreditation is for seven years, from Summer 2019 until the next renewal in Summer 2026.

Issue Brief: Taxable Sales in Southwest Florida

The recently published Regional Economic Indicators by the Regional Economic Research Institute reported that taxable sales were up 6 percent in October 2020 compared with October 2019. The Covid-19 protocols imposed by the state such as lockdowns and limited capacity imposed at businesses associated with consumer fear of face-to-face contact changed the pattern of consumption for most households who started to rely more heavily on online purchases. This shift in consumption pattern makes the reported numbers by the RERI puzzling at a first look. This issue brief digs deeper into the drivers of local taxable sales.

The Lutgert College of Business remains in constant contact with industry partners to make sure our graduates have the knowledge employers are looking for. This consistent communication has led to new majors in Supply Chain Management and Data Analytics, integration of advanced MS Excel skills into the accounting curriculum, and a new concentration in International Business for management majors. Yet the most frequent request across disciplines and majors is the need for “soft skills”: networking with clients, giving effective presentations, writing professional communications. Even a handshake can make the difference between clinching a deal or losing a client.

Cross-Market Integration and Sabotage

Sabotage activities often raise regulatory concerns due to the potential negative effects on competition and social welfare. These concerns are amplified when firms serving complementary markets integrate since the integrated firm may engage in multi-market sabotage. Interestingly, we find that the integrated firm may not have the incentive to engage in sabotage at all. It prefers to engage in sabotage only when it has cost advantages over its rivals in at least one of the markets. At the extreme, the firm’s sabotage actions could force some products out of the market and thus, there might be a need for regulatory intervention.

FGCU BSN STUDENTS OUTPERFORM AT FNSA VIRTUAL CONVENTION

Nine FGCU BSN students attended the 2020 FNSA Convention held virtually last October 22-24th along with assistant professor Dr. Sharon Wright, and successfully reached commendable accomplishments. FGCU’s NSA won the Breakthrough to Nursing award highlighting the dedication to service projects at FGCU and in the community. Also, FGCU nursing student Margaret Eardley was awarded a scholarship. Fantastic work NSA and Congratulations to Ms. Eardley. Nursing Students also played Kahoot with FGCU’s very own NSA President Carolyn Barrow holding the lead of the trivia challenge for several rounds. An additional notable gain, student Anna Albers won a Hurst NCLEX review in a raffle. In addition to all of these achievements, FGCU had 2 BSN students run for positions on the FNSA Executive Board with Chloe Paman being elected to the Region 7 Director position. Congratulations to Chloe Paman. We were allotted 1 delegate, Dante Ashpole, who represented FGCU in the House of Delegates by voting for us on four resolutions and the elections of the new FNSA officers. As always, we are proud of our FGCU BSN students for their commitment to community and academic excellence. We are equally proud of the commitment our faculty, administration and community partners fulfill to support student success. Go Eagles!!!

FGCU NURSING FACULTY RECEIVES $678,109.00 HRSA GRANT

Dr. Elizabeth Murray MSN Nurse Educator Program Director, Edith Potter Deats Professor in Nursing, and Associate Professor was awarded $678,109.00 HRSA grant for the Nurse Faculty Loan Program. The Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) is a U.S. Department of Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) partial loan forgiveness program made possible by a federal government grant. According to HRSA: The purpose of the NFLP is to increase the number of qualified nursing faculty by providing funding to accredited schools of nursing to offer loans to students enrolled in advanced education nursing degree programs who are committed to become nurse faculty. In exchange for full-time post-graduation employment as nurse faculty, the program authorizes cancellation of up to 85% of any such loan (plus interest thereon). Additional information regarding the NFLP can be accessed on the HRSA NFLP webpage. The goals of the NFLP are to decrease the financial barrier of serving as nurse faculty through loan cancellation and to increase the number of qualified nursing faculty nationwide. ROSANN SPIEGEL, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR & PROGRAM DIRECTOR, NURSE ANESTHESIOLOGY, RECEIVES $15,449.00 HRSA AWARD, NURSE ANESTHETIST TRAINEESHIP GRANT Congratulations to Dr. Rosann Spiegel for her effort on attaining the HRSA NA Traineeship Grant. The purpose of the Florida Gulf Coast University Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship (FGCU NAT) Program is to improve the national workforce distribution of nurse anesthesia practitioners in underserved and rural areas, increase the number of diverse and culturally competent nurse anesthesia practitioners in the workforce, and transform health care delivery by increasing the number of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) who are well-qualified to practice independently within collaborative, inter-professional teams to deliver the full continuum of anesthesia and pain management services in a manner that is responsive to HRSA’s priority of combatting the opioid crisis / improving mental health. The primary objectives of the FGCU NAT Program are to: 1) prepare registered nurses (RNs) to become CRNAs who are well qualified to practice independently within collaborative, inter-professional teams to deliver evidence-based, high-quality, and safe anesthesia and pain management services in a manner that is responsive to combatting the opioid crisis; 2) increase diversity within the nurse anesthesia profession by attracting, retaining, and graduating students from underrepresented minority (UM) and disadvantaged backgrounds 3) prepare RNs to become CRNAs who deliver anesthesia and pain management services to rural populations and medically underserved communities, 4) demonstrate that at least 60% of FGCU Nurse Anesthesiology (FGCU NA) Program graduates will be employed in clinical practice settings that are in health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) and/or serve rural populations and MUCs. Receiving the HRSA Traineeship Grant is a long-term attainment for the Florida Gulf Coast University Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship (FGCU NAT). Providing traineeships to nurse anesthesia students will cover costs associated with nurse anesthesia education. The HRSA grant award will increase the probability that nurse anesthesia students will be retained in and graduate from the Florida Gulf Coast University Nurse Anesthesiology Program (FGCU NA Program). You will be able to periodically observe our adventures as we continue to create our future at the Marieb College of Health and Human Services through these blogs! In the first issue we are highlighting the spring retirements of our loyal and accomplished faculty and administrators: Drs. Maddy Isaacs, Joan Glacken and Abbe Finn. Some of our readers from the disciplines of Counseling and Health Sciences may have experienced these remarkable professionals as faculty; and, others as colleagues. Regardless, we salute their dedication to FGCU and the people they served during their distinguished careers!
