Industry Diversification Project: Third Quarter 2022 Report

The RERI has published the Industry Diversification Report for the third quarter of 2022. The goal of the IDI is to measure industry diversification and, by extension, that of the workforce, in each of Florida’s 24 workforce regions, the state of Florida, and the remaining 49 states. The index measure is computed quarterly, soon after the release of workforce data from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. It spans from 0 to 10, with 0 signifying no diversification (or an economy characterized by a single industry), and 10 signifying perfect diversification (no concentration).

BSN Students Provide Assistance and Support at Pine Manor Community Center

Three FGCU BSN Students along with MSN Nurse Educator assisted with distribution of fresh grapes and cabbage to the residents of Pine Manor Community Center where they help the community in numerous ways each Thursday, led by FGCU School of Nursing, Associate Professor Dr. Cindy Farris. On this particular Thursday, the students assisted with distribution of fresh grapes and cabbage which were donated and delivered without notice to the Pine manor Community. As the word spread, several residents arrived at the center to collect the donated food. BSN students were able to offer additional services such as blood pressure checks, guide pregnant residents with WIC resources, helped to locate a podiatrist for diabetic foot care, assisted a resident whose water had been shut off, getting eye glasses for a resident through collaboration with the Lion's Club and promoting the Mobile Clinic. Dr. Farris stated she "was so proud of the students as they worked hard as we helped several residents. We ended the day helping the aftercare school program by assisting with homework as often their parents have lower education levels and some don’t speak English". Dr. Farris mentioned that having BSN students who spoke Spanish and Creole helped their them communicate with the Hispanic and Haitian residents.

Nurse Anesthesiology Students Selected to Attend 2022 Inaugural SRNA Leadership Conference

Exceptional BSN DNP Nurse Anesthesiology students Brittane Squires and Carmella Cicero were selected to attend the 2022 Inaugural Be a Landmark SRNA Leadership conference in Las Vegas, NV this past July. The students were selected by Nurse Anesthesiology Program Director, Dr. Virginia Londahl-Ramsey as well as community clinical site members, US Anesthesia Partners (USAP). Ms. Squires and Ms. Cicero were selected based upon their demonstrated leadership qualities as SRNA. The 2-day conference included a welcome reception and networking opportunity, as well as presentations with topics geared toward SRNA leadership, communication, and preparation for the SRNA to CRNA transition. Ms. Squires described “It was an amazing opportunity to have been selected and has made a lasting impression”. “All of the content delivered was extremely valuable and offers guidance that will help us throughout our anesthesia careers.” added Ms. Cicero. In this issue brief, we expand the analysis from our previously published issue brief that examined microbusinesses in Lee County, Florida by expanding the geographical area to all of Southwest Florida (defined as the five-county area encompassing Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee counties). Information in this Issue Brief was collected on July 29, 2022 from USA Reference database. The database represents a list of establishment-level records that is continuously updated to provide the most up-to-date information about businesses. US Reference provided 72,800 records containing all establishments with no more than 500 employees located in the entire region. The list included some records for individuals (primarily in the Health Care and Social Assistance industry) that worked for the same establishment. These records were removed from the analysis. Furthermore, all establishments that were in Public Administration were removed. This reduced the total number of records to 62,268.

BSN Student Volunteers with Panira Clinic to Provide Free Sports Physicals to Students of Everglades City

Rural Everglades City does not have a pediatrics office so Panira Clinic of Naples answered the call to provide sports physicals, for free to the students at the local K-12 school. Ryan Carmak, FGCU BSN student and Dr. Dzioba, Assistant Professor, volunteered to provide support through vision screening, blood pressure screening and BMI measurements which are needed to complete the physical. 16 students received a complete physical by Lawrence Egger PA and were provided with a completed form so they could participate in cross country, basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, and other physically active sports. This free sports physical clinic was organized in coordination with the Everglades City school and the local community and has been a yearly event since the need was identified post-Irma. Without this service families have to travel to Naples or to Marco Island to receive services taking several hours to complete. With the support of FGCU BSN students, Faculty and Panira Clinic, families waited less than an hour for the service. We are proud of our BSN Eagles! Thank you for your willingness to serve to help others in need. Go Eagles!

Issue Brief: New Hire Wage Index

Every quarter, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW), a dataset that provides a snapshot of the current state of the labor market in a defined geographical region. The QCEW is one of the most cited resources for the labor market and is used often by the media, policymakers and academics to provide commentary, analysis and projections. While the QCEW is indeed a high-quality source for labor market data, it is also limited with respect to information it provides on wages. While it will tell the user what the average quarterly wage is in an industry, it will not provide any information for how new hires will fare in this industry.

Arguing that teaching and learning goals should drive instructors’ technology use, not the other way around, Intentional Tech explores seven research-based principles for matching technology to pedagogy. Through stories of instructors who creatively and effectively use educational technology, author Derek Bruff approaches technology not by asking “How to?” but by posing a more fundamental question: “Why?”

FGCU Rist Family Foundation High School Ethics Competition 2022 Winners Named

After a COVID hiatus, Florida Gulf Coast University’s Newton Ethical Leadership Initiative (NELI) once again hosted its annual FGCU Rist Family Foundation High School Ethics Competition, this time as an individual event. Students were asked to respond to a real-life event in which an auditor finds that the CEO and employees of a mental health organization are “Doing Bad to Do Good.” They are knowingly requesting reimbursement for services they are not delivering, but they are providing other services they deem critical for their clients, but just aren’t reimbursable in the way the government policy is written. Students have to decide the right thing to do and then find strategies for overcoming the reasons and rationalizations that people are likely to present as roadblocks to doing the right thing.

Bill Daubmann named BGS Chapter Honoree 2022

Entrepreneur Bill Daubmann, founder and president of My Shower Door / D3 Glass, has been named the Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter Honoree for 2022. At the April 29th Induction Ceremony on the FGCU Campus, Mr. Daubmann delivered a lively and heartfelt chronicle of his journey from a reluctant student in Springfield, Massachusetts, through ten seasons as an on-ice American Hockey League referee, and ultimately to the founding and building of MY Shower Door. Today the business employs more than 165 associates at nine retail location, a glass manufacturing and fabrication subsidiary, and an architectural glass division. Each year the FGCU Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS)’s student officers select a prominent community member to recognize with an honorary membership into the international business honor society. Chapter Honorees must have achieved distinction primarily in business and administration and demonstrate those qualities that Beta Gamma Sigma fosters, including honor, wisdom, and earnestness. Founded in 1913, Beta Gamma Sigma is the international business honor society for AACSB-accredited schools, which are the top 5% of business school programs around the world. Inducted as students, BGS members go on to serve in critical leadership roles in corporate, entrepreneurial, government, non-profit, and academic sectors. Members currently reside in all 50 U. Issue Brief: Unemployment Levels by Industry

Southwest Florida had a seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8 percent in February 2020. In the following month the Covid-19 pandemic reached the country and the region. The mitigating policies designed to curtail the spread of the virus resulted in a spike in the unemployment rate, rising as high as 13.1 percent by April 2020. The region’s unemployment rate has recovered since this apex, reaching 4.0 percent by December 2021. However, looking at simply the unemployment rate does not tell the complete story. After all, stay-at-home policies, supply chain disruptions, and changes in consumer preferences have impacted industries in various ways. Industries such as financial activities and professional and business services were much more equipped to weather these shocks over other industries such as leisure and hospitality, and education and health services.

Industry Diversification Project: First Quarter 2022 Report

The RERI has published the Industry Diversification Report for the first quarter of 2022. The goal of the IDI is to measure industry diversification and, by extension, that of the workforce, in each of Florida’s 24 workforce regions, the state of Florida, and the remaining 49 states. The index measure is computed quarterly, soon after the release of workforce data from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. It spans from 0 to 10, with 0 signifying no diversification (or an economy characterized by a single industry), and 10 signifying perfect diversification (no concentration).

FGCU Inaugural DNP Nurse Anesthesiology Program White Coat Ceremony

There was not a dry eye in the house at the inaugural Doctor of Nursing Practice Nurse Anesthesia (DNP NA) White Coat Ceremony. The ceremony was initially planned for August 2021 however it was postponed due to Covid-19. Dr. Virginia Londahl-Ramsey, DNP NA Assistant Program Director stated that even though she was disappointed that the ceremony did not take place in the fall, she felt that the January 27th, 2022 ceremony was even more meaningful for the students after being in clinicals for five months. This ceremony allowed the nursing students to embrace leadership and celebrate becoming an advanced provider. The monumental event for the DNP NA Class of 2023 cohort consisted of the presentation of white coats by DNP NA Program Director Dr. Rosann Spiegel along with Dr. Londahl-Ramsey to twenty-four students. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Loureen Downes, the Director for the school’s Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program. Students also received a pin and recited the Oath to Compassionate Patient Care, which promotes the advocacy and protection of patient health, safety and rights. One of the most special moments of the ceremony was when the DNP NA students surprised Dr. Spiegel by presenting her with a bronze plate with an eagle to show their appreciation. The ceremony was made possible by a grant from the Gold Foundation. The organization established the White Coat Ceremony in 1993 to “highlight the importance of humanism in all care of patients”. Moving forward, the students will now advance to their specialty roles which includes cardiac anesthesiology, spinal taps, epidural and pediatric anesthesiology.
