Morgan T. Paine is an Associate Professor of Art at Florida Gulf Coast University, where he is the founding member of FGCU Art Program, beginning as the sole art faculty member and Program Leader for Art in 1997. He has had multiple roles within FGCU’s visual arts program as it has grown from six students to nearly 300 art and design majors and seven full-time faculty members. Paine holds an MFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and a BA in Studio Art from Reed College in Portland, OR. He previously taught from 1984 to 1997 in Milwaukee at Alverno College, an institution that pioneered ability-based, outcome-driven education. Prior to that he worked for three years at the Pennsylvania State University where he was an Instructor and Director of both the Zoller and Chambers Art Gallery where he organized nearly 60 exhibitions in those spaces over a three-year period and established The Gamble Mill Gallery, an alternative space in Bellefonte, PA in a 19th century grist mill.

He is a practicing artist who paints every day, who has shown his paintings in multiple one-person and group shows for more than four decades. He is a life member of CAA where has served has a member of both the Professional Practices and the Education Committee, and is currently on the Council of Readers for the organization’s Annual Conference. He has presented papers, poster presentations and hosted roundtable discussions on issues related to appropriate terminal degrees in the studio arts, a census of current MFA degree granting institution and the number of MFA degrees granted annually. He resides in Naples, FL.

Florida Gulf Coast University’s Associate Professor of Art, Morgan T. Paine is the founding member of FGCU Art Program, joining the faculty as the sole art faculty member and Program Leader for Art in 1997.

He has been active in the nurturing FGCU’s visual arts program as it has grown to include more than 150 art majors, seven full-time faculty members, and a significant number of adjunct faculty. For five years he was Director of the FGCU Library Art Gallery, curating and overseeing the creation of more than 40 exhibitions. He was active in the planning and development of the $7.1 million Art Complex which opened in August 2002.

Paine holds an MFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and a BA in Studio Art from Reed College in Portland, OR. Born in Waukesha, WI, he previously taught from 1984 to 1997 in Milwaukee at Alverno College, an institution that pioneered ability-based, outcome-driven education. Prior to that he worked for three years at the Pennsylvania State University where he was Director of the Zoller Art Gallery.

He is a practicing artist who paints every day. He has shown his work in numerous one-person shows, as well as in multiple group shows across the country. He received a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship in 1986 to participate in a Summer Seminar for College Faculty at Princeton University. In addition he has multiple institutional grants to support his studio work. In 2006-7 academic year Paine completed a sabbatical where he traveled to see contemporary earthworks in the American Southwest, then spent three weeks in Germany visiting art galleries and museums, traveled to New York to see the Dia-Beacon complex and spent ten days in Beijing and Xi’an, China.

He has taught introductory and advanced painting, Methods and Concepts (2-D design), supervises Internships and Independent Studies courses classes at FGCU; he has also taught various levels of drawing, 19th and 20th century Art History and “Issues in Media, Literature and the Arts,” as well as “Foundations of Civic Engagement” and the Art Program’s Senior Project course.

He has served multiple terms on FGCU Faculty Senate as a representative from the College of Arts and Sciences. He is active in the United Faculty of Florida-FGCU chapter, serving as the union’s Chief Negotiator of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and as Vice President and as a Senator. His institutional service includes a significant number of memberships on departmental, college and university committees.
