Research and Teaching Interests
Toggle Research and Teaching InterestsMike’s teaching and research interests concern the history of environmental change
in coastal settings, particularly in response to human development, climate change,
and sea-level rise. His research has helped foster environmental management and restoration
efforts in Southwest Florida and assisted archaeologists understand the environmental
context of Calusa Native American cultural evolution.
In fall, 2017 he began a large, 3-year NOAA-funded effort with University of Florida helping managers and planners in Collier
County, Southwest Florida contend with the projected effects of sea-level rise. Finally,
Mike has extended his research and educational activities to the Commonwealth of the
Bahamas, where he is investigating similar phenomena and aiding the Bahamian government
in their long-range planning.
