    Sharon Isern is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and has been at Florida Gulf Coast University since 2004. She received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She conducted postdoctoral fellowships in molecular virology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Tulane University. Dr. Isern is a molecular virologist and a science educator. She has received research support from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, and the US Department of Agriculture. Dr. Isern was a member of the National Institutes of Health Vaccines Against Microbial Diseases Study Section (2015-2019) and was Course Director for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) Program Phage Discovery Workshops (2015, 2016). She studies the immunology, epidemiology, surveillance, prevention, and treatment of mosquito-transmitted viruses including dengue and Zika. She teaches Cell Biology and Virology, and develops undergraduate research-based courses.
