Global Sustainable Design

August 2019 – September 2019

This exhibition contains works from students from the 2019 Global Sustainable Design course study abroad. Students traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark; Malmo, Sweden; and London, U.K. to experience firsthand practical approaches to sustainable design. The students were asked to explore current practices in sustainable design and then create works that could translate to the U.S. culturally. The focus is on challenging and changing existing attitudes, products, spaces, communications and communities as a positive step toward a greener, more ecologically balanced future.

Visual Language: The Nature of Typography & Literature

August 2018 – September 2018

In this collaborative experience, typographers in Sasha Minsky’s “Principles of Typography” course responded to Haikus and Sentences developed by the student authors of Jesse Millner’s “Introduction to Nature Writing” course. These Haikus, inspired by nature, provided a starting point for emerging typographers to develop installation typography in the forms of digital media, mixed media, and experiential installations involving light and shadow. Individuals will have the opportunity to experience this innovative ecosystem, which emerged from this unique cross-collaboration.

Visual Language: Typography and Creative Writing

August 2017 – September 2017

When typography, the design and creation of type, is applied to literary texts, this collaboration can result in a hybrid form of art that provides incredible visuals and summons intellectually stimulating experiences for both the artists and their audiences. This exhibition features the work of the Special Topics Advanced Typography course instructed by Sasha Minsky in collaboration with Jesse Millner’s Narrative Techniques creative writing class. Students from both courses worked together to bring literary narratives alive through the use of innovative typography techniques.

DMD Workshop Fall 2014 Pop Up Show

April 2014 – May 2014

The final body of work was the culmination of the semester. Students presented a project proposal to the instructor which was then discussed and approved. Focus of the project was on the audience and the appropriate presentation of the work for a pop-up one day show in the arts complex at FGCU. The final piece(s) had to have a solid conceptual and aesthetic framework and be presented cohesively to an audience.
