FGCU Nursing and Therapy Students Collaborate in Interprofessional Experience

On November 22, 2022, FGCU graduating therapy students joined nursing students in the Safety, Mobility, and Musculoskeletal Foundations Lab. The BSN Foundations Lab students worked in pairs with one graduating therapy student. Additionally, there was one therapy leader student who circulated the room to ensure all expected skills of the lab were covered for the lab session. The therapy students spent 100 minutes with the BSN Nursing Foundations students. The subjects covered were: range of motion exercises, prevention of falls, body mechanics, ergonomic principles, turning and positioning, moving and transferring, gait belt use, canes, walker use, crutches, wheelchair use and mobility, and ambulation. The BSN Nursing students expressed their confidence in these skills following the interprofessional collaboration with the graduating therapy students. Equally, the graduating therapy students also voiced this was an excellent experience to come to the simulation lab to collaborate with the BSN students.

School of Nursing and Oasis Charter School Clinical Partnership Flourishes

Since 2021, FGCU School of Nursing students using the leadership of Melanie Klages, OASIS Charter Schools System Nurse have learned the special intricacies of the school nurse role. Nursing students believed that school nurses only dealt with a readily available band aid or ice pack, but learned through school nursing clinical rotations that today’s school nurse prepares students to face the challenges involved with disease management and disaster events. Recently, two FGCU Community Nursing students, Abigail Buchholz and Brooke Bzdawka assisted Mrs. Klages in mandatory primary prevention education to ninth grade students on CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED), choking, first-aid, and trauma principles. These trainings are mandated by the state of Florida for all sixth, ninth and eleventh graders. The purpose of this education for the OASIS students is in relationship to previous events surrounding school shootings. “The best part of the experience was taking part in primary prevention. Oftentimes, we only take part in tertiary prevention and feel like there’s only so much we can do.” Abigail Buchholz The multiple visits by the Community Health nursing students at this clinical rotation emphasized the importance of effective teaching to this pediatric population. The OASIS students have learned from the Community Health Nursing students about nursing school, FGCU and the value of the nursing profession. “In the end, I thought this experience was helpful for me in my nursing career. It also made me realize how much knowledge and confidence I have gained in nursing school at FGCU.” Brooke Bzdawka. The impact of the partnership between OASIS Charter Schools and FGCU School of Nursing is far-reaching and lasting. FGCU School of Nursing is grateful for this partnership and especially for Mrs. Klages and her endless devotion to students and the nursing profession.

Florida Gulf Coast University School of Nursing is proud to announce the BSN Program has again achieved a 98.8% NCLEX pass rate! Over the last three quarters, FGCU has had an impressive 95-100% NCLEX pass rate. This is an awesome achievement! FGCU School of Nursing is proud to announce that the FGCU RN program has been ranked as one of the best for 2023! BSN Students Provide Assistance and Support at Pine Manor Community Center

Three FGCU BSN Students along with MSN Nurse Educator assisted with distribution of fresh grapes and cabbage to the residents of Pine Manor Community Center where they help the community in numerous ways each Thursday, led by FGCU School of Nursing, Associate Professor Dr. Cindy Farris. On this particular Thursday, the students assisted with distribution of fresh grapes and cabbage which were donated and delivered without notice to the Pine manor Community. As the word spread, several residents arrived at the center to collect the donated food. BSN students were able to offer additional services such as blood pressure checks, guide pregnant residents with WIC resources, helped to locate a podiatrist for diabetic foot care, assisted a resident whose water had been shut off, getting eye glasses for a resident through collaboration with the Lion's Club and promoting the Mobile Clinic. Dr. Farris stated she "was so proud of the students as they worked hard as we helped several residents. We ended the day helping the aftercare school program by assisting with homework as often their parents have lower education levels and some don’t speak English". Dr. Farris mentioned that having BSN students who spoke Spanish and Creole helped their them communicate with the Hispanic and Haitian residents.
