To help meet the critical demand for teachers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), FGCU offers scholarships for qualified, talented students majoring in STEM disciplines and minoring in education who commit to becoming certified teachers and serving in local public schools after graduation.
With funding from the National Science Foundation’s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program, Noyce@FGCU offers financial support for up to 4 years of tuition and housing for STEM majors. Recipients receive:
Noyce@FGCU STEM Scholarships is a cooperative initiative of FGCU’s College of Education and Whitaker Center for STEM Education and the school districts of Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee counties.
Noyce@FGCU scholars take all of the required courses for a STEM major and an education minor. Scholars commit to employment as a teacher in a high-need school district for 2 years for each year of scholarship support, up to a total of 4 years. (All 5 local counties are high-need.)
Graduates become certified teachers after one year of in-service teaching and receive mentoring through both the College of Education and the district to ensure their success.
Learning Assistants Program: This program is separate from the Noyce scholarships, but partially funded through the grant. Freshman and sophomore STEM majors are encouraged to apply to be learning assistants in classes in which they've excelled. As an LA, these students will be mentored by a faculty member and will get to learn about current teaching/learning theory through a discussion-based course. Students may then decide to apply for the Noyce scholarship and become a STEM teacher, but that is not a requirement of the program. Learn more about the LA program here.
Summer Internships: The Whitaker Center and other FGCU entities have several paid opportunities for STEM students who think they might be interested in teaching to get involved with K-12 teachers or students during the summer! These opportunities focus on STEM education and applicants must be U.S. Citizens, Nationals, or permanent residents.
