Dr. James's research interests are in anaerobic microbial physiology and molecular biology. Using intradisciplinary approaches their lab is working to elucidate fermentative and anaerobic pathways that influence virulence factor production that contribute to the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus and other Gram+ pathogens. Dr. James also works with characterizing extremophilic anaerobic organisms and expanding current knowledge gaps in the cultivation of syntrophs, a group of slow growing organisms that chisel out an existence by living on the thermodynamic edge of life.
