5 things to know

Explore innovative ideas and perspectives, engage with others and be inspired this October through a variety of campus events to spark curiosity and connection. From open mics to lectures and speaker series, employees are invited to take part in experiences that embrace curiosity, one of FGCU’s institutional values, reflecting the pursuit of knowledge with openness, creativity and determination.

1: The Arts @ the Library | Oct. 8 

An evening of fine arts, music, theater and literature from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wilson G. Bradshaw Library. All are welcome to present artistic creations, including readings, screenings, performances or digital displays of current artwork. 

2. The Water School Presents Series | Oct. 10

Hear from Dr. Barry Rosen, world-class scholar and professor in the Department of Ecology & Environmental Studies, as he presents on “The Photosynthetic Tree of Life from the FGCU Campus Aquatic Habitats” from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Academic Building 9, Room 106. 

3. My Leadership Journey: Dr. Debbie Thorne | Oct. 20 

Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Debbie Thorne shares insights from her journey in higher education. Learn about the experiences, challenges and milestones that have shaped her career, and gain perspective on leadership, academic growth and what it takes to succeed in today’s evolving educational landscape. Stop by from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Sugden Hall, Room 114. 

4. FGCU Storytelling: Open Mic | Oct. 21 

Join the community from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the FGCU Wasmer Art Gallery to listen or tell your five-minute story. From personal stories to folk tales and everything in between, you’ll have the opportunity to hear from various genres. 

5. FGCU Scholar Series | Oct. 29 

Stop by for lunch and a lecture by Dr. Osman Karatüm from the Department of Environmental Engineering as he presents “Lead Contamination in Soil: Assessing Concentrations Around Regional Airports in South Florida.” This event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. by the Data Visualization Wall area at the Wilson G. Bradshaw Library.
