Recharge and refresh during the holiday season

December 01, 2025

Three glass candle holders with lit white candles are arranged on a table decorated with a red geometric-patterned cloth and a green pine garland with pinecones. Warm, blurred lights glow in the background, creating a festive atmosphere.

The holiday season is a time for giving, but it’s also important to give yourself the gift of well-being. As you prepare for FGCU’s winter break, Dec. 24–Jan. 2, Nikki Kirdahy, director of Prevention & Wellness, shares various ways employees can stay balanced, energized and ready to enjoy a restful holiday season.

Give yourself permission to pause

The holidays can be a whirlwind of activity. Schedule short breaks throughout your day to breathe, stretch or take a walk. Even five minutes of quiet can help reset your mind and reduce stress.

Set boundaries around your time

Protect your time by setting limits on commitments, whether it’s attending events, volunteering or taking on extra tasks. Prioritize what brings you joy and connection.

Nourish yourself

Make sure you’re eating balanced meals, staying hydrated and getting enough sleep. Wellness starts with the basics.

Practice intentional gratitude

Take a moment each day to reflect on something you’re grateful for. This simple habit can shift your mindset, reduce anxiety and help you stay grounded amid the holiday hustle.

Create a “joy” list

Write down three to five things that bring you joy and make time for them weekly. Whether it’s reading, baking or spending time with loved ones, intentionally engaging in joyful activities helps replenish your energy.

Embrace “good enough”

Perfection isn’t the goal – presence is! Whether it is decorating, cooking or gift-giving, allow yourself to do things in a way that feels manageable and meaningful, not exhausting.

Unplug and recharge

Take intentional breaks from screens and social media. Constant connectivity can increase stress and comparison. Take some time to rest, reflect or connect in person.

Ask for help when you need it

You don’t have to do it alone. Whether it is delegating tasks or asking for support, reaching out can lighten your load.

When we take care of ourselves, we strengthen the entire FGCU community. Take time to recharge; you’ve earned it!
