Internships and co-operative programs differ in scope and intent.

What is an internship?
An internship is a short-term, mutually beneficial relationship between a student and an employer.  The student must be able to gain experience in his/her field of study while attending classes. This temporary experience can be paid or unpaid and the student may or may not choose to earn academic credit. The internship must be overseen by a supervisor who is an expert in the field. It is not a clerical position.

Students typically work 10 to 24 hours a week during a semester.

What is a cooperative?
A cooperative program is typically longer than an internship, consisting of a full-time position for a period of several months, during which the student works in a specific discipline for pay, a stipend, or similar benefits. The student may or may not attend classes during this time. The purpose of a “co-op” is to partner with an employer to master a specific discipline.

Participants typically work 24-40 hours per week.

There are various departments that work with students to arrange internships and we connect to all of them. While making arrangements for an international internship or one coordinated by another department or division, make sure to connect with the Office Internships and Cooperative Programs to ensure that you have taken all the proper steps and that you will receive credit if the program offers it.
