Public Health (B.S.P.H.)

The Bachelor of Science in Public Health (B.S.P.H.) degree is designed to prepare students for various careers in addressing the health and wellness needs of individuals, families, communities, and populations, at scales ranging from local to global (Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health, 2015).

Public health includes aspects of epidemiology, environmental health, community health, emergency preparedness, health policy, health law, and health economics. Contemporary issues addressed by public health professionals include: disease prevention, natural disaster response, reducing health disparities, climate change and health, health education, tobacco cessation, diet and exercise promotion, and immunization campaigns, among many other population health-related activities.

The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates of the program for multiple pathways: employment as a public health professional; graduate study in areas such as public health, health services administration, allied health fields such as occupational therapy, or physician assistant, or other graduate education such as law school. Students are responsible for researching the admission requirements of specific graduate degree programs. Students may pursue the degree requirements on a full-time or part-time basis. Service learning experiences and a capstone project are components of the major program of study. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an advisor throughout the program.

Visit Explore Health Careers for further information on a career in public health or another health profession.

Upon completing program prerequisites, please contact the departmental Executive Secretary at 239-590-7495 for admission into the program.
