Mentoring Opportunities

Our programs seek mentors that have demonstrated leadership and academic excellence. The requirements vary in each program, but criteria is typically GPA, university and community involvement, total academic credits completed, and knowledge of university transition and student success resources at FGCU. Student mentors are typically paid through the department that houses the program. Payment varies in each program but usually comes in the form of an annual stipend or financial aid award. 

Student mentors are paired with their mentee(s) and meet regularly to discuss goals, progress, and action plans to maximize the university experience. Mentors are expected to maintain contact with their mentee(s) and should always practice open communication with the program coordinator(s). 

Our programs start looking for new mentors in the spring semester of each academic year. Find the application dates and deadlines on our calendar below! Selected students will undergo a training and orientation process and should expect to attend orientation events for their respective program(s). 

While mentors make tranformational change happen for their mentees, effective mentors gain essential skills throughout the mentoring relationship that are attractive to any instiution. According to Management Mentors (2018), the most valuable skills that effective mentors have are open-mindedness, active listening, critical questioning, open honesty, and self-awareness and reflection. Our student mentors are leaders on campus and can maximize their experiences in class, student organizations, and academic engagement opportunities like internships and research to sharpen these skills.
